For half a century, VOS has brought essential eye care to regional and rural communities across Victoria, helping to improve vision health and quality of life.
Ali Abud, a Deakin University optometry student, gained invaluable experience through his placement at Lorne Community Hospital, working alongside qualified optometrists and managing a variety of eye conditions. One memorable case involved a patient with persistent dry eye disease, showing how continuity of care and simple interventions can make a real difference.
‘I gained an enriching experience and knowledge of collaborative rural health by having access to liaisons with doctors, exercise physiologists and other health professionals. This exposure has strengthened my clinical and interpersonal skills while encouraging myself and my peers to consider pursuing a career in rural health upon graduation,’ says Ali.
VOS continues to support students and communities, ensuring access to quality eye care where it’s needed most.
