This is a wonderful opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse Div 1 to support and work with the local Dja Dja Wurrung community as practice nurse.

You will be responsible for providing health care, health education, advocating and support to your Aboriginal community, and for promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy choices from a holistic position.
In this role, you will also provide primary health care for clients attending the Health Service through health promotion and assistance with pre-screening/triage, immunization, pathology, health education, along with lots of chronic disease management and support.

Working with a great multidisciplinary team, including Aboriginal Health workers, GPs, and a supportive administrative team.

Key Selection Criteria: (Please address this in a cover letter)

  • Registered Nurse Division 1 with current AHPRA registration
  • Experience in general practice, or community nursing  (candidates with aged care or hospital exp only will not be short-listed)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and compliance with all relevant legislation and common law
    obligations affecting nursing
  • Discharge of duty of care during practice including meeting practice standards, and
    accountability
  • Knowledge and understanding of the health issues that face Aboriginal people and their
    communities. Respect, understand & acknowledge the traditions of Aboriginal people
  • An understanding of a Community Controlled Health Organisation
  • Knowledge of current immunisation schedule, diabetes management, asthma management,
    enhancing primary care items, infection control, CPR and emergency resuscitation techniques, equipment & drugs.
  • Demonstrated patient-focused approach in service provision with genuine empathy and interest in their needs
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding patient and practice information
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently plan and organise own workload. Work cooperatively within a team as well as be able to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stressful situations and demanding workloads
  • Effective interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication
  • Advanced computer skills, knowledge of Best Practice software.
  • Access to Medicare provider number
  • Criminal Police Record Check, Working with Children’s Check and must hold current full Victorian Drivers Licence (or be eligible to apply if interstate)
  • Full working rights/perm residency no visa sponsorship, no temp residency or student visas

Desirable:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualification in Community Health/Primary Health Care
  •  Training or experience in Medicare items numbers
  • Previous Cultural Awareness training, or willingness to undertake the course
  • Local connections to the Aboriginal community

Practice Details:

The Bendigo & District Aboriginal Cooperative (BDAC) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation founded to represent and provide services to the Dja Dja Wurrung community (Jaara people) and Aboriginal residents living in the Dja Dja Wurrung boundaries.

BDAC provides a range of specialist services including Health and Wellbeing services, Family and Community Services and Corporate services. They provide a number of programs covering the entire Loddon Campaspe; Aboriginal Family Decision Making (AFDM), Indigenous Tenants At Risk (ITAR), and Aboriginal Women’s and Children’s Case Management (AWWCM), and provides services to Aboriginal youth through programs such as the Local Justice and Juvenile Justice program, Koori placement and support, Young Wellbeing program, male and female youth groups.

Bendigo and District Aboriginal health clinic plays an integral ongoing role within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and the medical clinic currently has 2 GPs , 2 registrars, nursing staff, Aboriginal health workers, visiting Paediatrician and a supportive administrative team.
