About Echuca

The twin towns of Echuca Moama straddle the Murray River approximately 180 km directly north of Melbourne and under 50 minutes from the major provincial centres of Shepparton and Bendigo. The two towns serve as a commercial centre for the surrounding farming region and are within the traditional lands of the Yorta Yorta Nation.

The history of Echuca is closely linked to the great inland Murray Darling river system and the paddle steamers that provided a link for isolated inland communities and farmers to access Melbourne and overseas markets via the rail link from Echuca. The Port of Echuca became the largest inland port in Australia. The riverboat trade was of national importance because it opened up inland Australia for settlement, increasing the country’s wool production. As the resultant ship building industry grew, Echuca and the surrounding district supported a large prosperous timber felling and milling industry. The improvement in the road and rail system heralded the demise of the paddle steamer trade and today the steamers and the wharves have been restored as tourist attractions.

The combination of history, natural beauty, wildlife parks, water sports, fishing and golf courses provide locals and tourists with a vibrant and healthy lifestyle. An active cultural community, a wonderful climate, excellent shops, restaurants, cafes, clubs, relaxed lifestyle and warmer climate makes Echuca Moama a great place to visit.
