General Practitioner: Castlemaine

The position is for an accredited teaching practice in Castlemaine seeking a full-time General Practitioner (6-10 sessions per week). The successful GP will be expected to participate in the after-hours on call roster (currently 1:13) coordinated through the local hospital and shared with other practices. The practice has VMO rights to Castlemaine Health and provides services to local nursing homes. Obstetrics procedural skills would be highly regarded but not essential.

An extensive orientation is provided to ensure ease of transition into the practice. A list of community services has been prepared and support is provided for the GP and family to settle in to the community, including finding accommodation.

Essential Criteria

  • AHPRA Specialist Registration
  • Accident and Emergency skills
  • Doctors enrolled in a training program with RACGP or ACCRM will be considered

The Package

  • Initial 12 to 18 month contract with 3 month probation period
  • 2 billing options on offer – 60% with PIP and 65% without PIP
  • After hours work is 90-95% of billings (all after hours patients are bulk-billed)
  • Hospital VMO payments can be salary packaged

Practice Details:

Botanical Gardens Health in Castlemaine is an accredited teaching practice that provides training to medical students from the Extended Rural Cohort of the Monash University, Bendigo Campus. It is an accredited practice for GP registrars training through Beyond Medical Education.

Currently 13 doctors are supported by a team of practice nurses, a practice manager and experienced administration team. The practice has 7 consulting rooms. The practice also has a treatment room where minor procedures, ECGs, spirometry, vaccinations, dressings, cardiovascular risk assessments, Holter monitoring, 24 hour BP monitoring and dressings are performed.

Practice hours are Monday to Friday, 9am – 5.30pm and, 9am – 1pm every second and forth Saturday of the month. After-hours commitments are shared with other practices in Castlemaine through a roster coordinated by Castlemaine Health.

The main health issues that impact the practice are drug and alcohol, and aged care related. A Urologist and Cardiologist visit the practice monthly. The practice also employs a nurse dedicated to EPC items.

Allied health services available through Castlemaine Health include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, speech therapy and psychology. There are 30 acute medical and surgical beds and a 10 bed day procedures unit. Visiting Specialists, including a Gynaecologist, Urologist, ENT, General Surgeon, Opthalmologist and Endocrinologist can be seen locally. There is a local Mental Health Service and a Community Health Centre providing a range of services including counselling, diabetes and asthma education.

The Area

Castlemaine has a population of 8,000,  with a catchment of 20,000 from the surrounding Shire. It is a former gold mining town located between the large rural cities of Ballarat and Bendigo, situated in a valley at the junction of three creeks. After the heady Gold Rush days, Castlemaine established itself as a prosperous agricultural, arts and tourism centre. The beautiful historic unique Georgian streetscapes are a reminder of it’s gold mining heritage, and the large botanical gardens are evidence of the previous wealth and status of the city.

Castlemaine has transformed itself into a vibrant and culturally rich town bustling with sophisticated energy. Renowned for its artists, artisans and art galleries, the region is abuzz with quality cafes, eclectic shops and fresh food suppliers that support a lifestyle attracting ever increasing numbers of new residents.

Getting There

Castlemaine is 120km from Melbourne, an easy 90 minute drive. It is well serviced with rail and bus links to Melbourne.
