Cultural Safety Training for Students

Rural Workforce Agency Victoria (RWAV) is a not-for-profit government-funded organisation dedicated to improving healthcare for rural, regional and Aboriginal communities in Victoria.

To encourage the future health workforce of Victoria to engage in opportunities that will increase their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, RWAV are partnering with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) to fund the cost of Cultural Safety Training session attendance.

The virtual 4.5-hour training sessions will further participants understanding of how to work, and communicate, effectively with Aboriginal people and will include information regarding the following topics

  • Aboriginal people, communities & culture
  • Aboriginal Identity
  • Impact of history on Aboriginal people
  • Practical strategies to implement Cultural Safety into practice

Sessions will run across the 20/21 financial year and will be assessed in competitive rounds (one round in 2020 and one round in 2021).  Applicants who show a genuine passion for working in a rural setting after graduation will be prioritised.

  • Please have your student ID card that indicates Victorian University or Victorian Tertiary Education Provider
  • Be prepared to answer several questions regarding your interest in rural health 
  • Complete the online application form 
  • Be able to attend one of VACCHOS Cultural Safety Training Workshops in 2020 on one of the dates specified below 
  • Applicants must be studying a health discipline (excluding paramedicine) at a Victorian University or Victorian Tertiary Education Provide

Tuesday 24 November, 2020 from 10:00am to 3:00pm

Wednesday 2 December, 2020 from 10:00am to 3:00pm

Wednesday 3 March 2021 from 10:00am to 3:00pm

Thursday 11 March 2021 from 10:00am to 3:00pm



  • Grant will cover applicants course cost 
  • If applicant is approved RWAV will liaise with the applicant to confirm desired workshop dates and will pay the participants course fees directly to VACCHO


  • Applications will be assessed and successful applicants determined by the RWAV Grants Panel within one week of the round closing date    
  • Assessment will include a review of the responses to the questions posed
  • Applications submitted after the grant closing date and time will not be accepted
  • Applications must be submitted through the RWAV website
