Mentoring

RWAV has arranged for mentoring to be available to support OTDs settling into general practice in rural Victoria.

Mentoring refers to an ongoing supportive relationship between the OTD and an experienced rural medical practitioner. It is a process by which the mentor acts as an experienced guide, advisor, trusted counsellor or advocate.

The mentor assumes responsibility for helping the OTD learn and to achieve their potential (ACRRM - Standards for Teachers and Teaching Posts in Rural and Remote Medicine 2002).

OTDs interested in accessing mentoring should contact RWAV on (03) 9349 7800.

Rural Emergency Skills Training Course (REST)

RWAV, with input from key rural GPs and other specialist teachers, has developed a REST Course which has been designed to be applicable to all rural practitioners.

The aim of the course is to enhance skills in initial management of medical emergencies in rural areas. The course is conducted over two days (16 hours) and a comprehensive manual is supplied.

The manual is designed to reflect the range of emergencies arising in rural practice to encompass best-practice principles of emergency care and to be readily accessible in the emergency situation.

Aboriginal Awareness in Practice Program

RWAV has identified as a requirement of GPs, and particularly of Overseas Trained Doctors, that they gain a better understanding of Aboriginal culture.

The Victoria Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) has developed a cross-cultural workshop able to be delivered in conjunction with local Aboriginal Controlled Health Services.

Topics covered include:

  • Background information
  • Aboriginal affairs in Victoria
  • Working with indigenous culture today

Women's Health

RWAV, in conjunction with the Jean Hailes Foundation, has developed "The succesfully working with women and their Health" program, especifically to meet the needs of OTDs.

The program focuses on improving the general health status of women in rural communities and addresses the issues of gender and health, depression, contraception, domestic violence, consultations for well women and the menopausal years.
In 2007, the program will include a session of sensitive examinations of women by Pap screen Victoria.

Rural Examination Preparation Program

RWAV’s Rural Exam Preparation Program (REPP) assists OTDs in their preparation for Fellowship examination of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP)This Commonwealth funded program is for doctors working on the Victorian Overseas Trained Doctors Rural Recruitment Scheme (VORRS) and the Rural Locum Relief Program (RLRP).

An Individual Learning Plan  (ILP) is tailored for each of the participants.  The ILP identifies gaps in medical knowledge and clinical experience which helps in the development of a learning strategy for each individual.

REPP funds examination preparation programs delivered by divisions, RTPs, GPREP and other REPP providers.

If you are a doctor on VORRS or RLRP interested in this program, contact RWAV on (03) 9349 7800.
