GPET and the Australian General Practice Training Program

General Practice Education and Training (GPET) was established in 2001 by the Australian Government to develop, oversee and fund Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) for postgraduate medical practitioners.

GPET has established a regionalised training program delivered via 21 regional training providers (RTPs), which provide personalised and innovative training that meets the standards of relevant medical colleges, while at the same time focusing on the particular health care needs of regional communities.

GPET and the RTPs work closely with key stakeholders in delivering vocational training for general practice – including the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM), universities, divisions of general practice, rural clinical schools, rural workforce agencies and GP registrar and supervisor organisations.

Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) aims to provide doctors with the knowledge and skills to undertake competent, unsupervised general practice; and meet their community's health care needs. It is a three year program, combining training in both hospital and general practice environments
