Ahhh relief...

Doctor's Awards

RWAV’s locum relief program is designed to take the pressure of our GPs who practise in rural Victoria. To further bolster the program, we are in the final stages of recruiting locums for the statewide program. Contact Tony Mackinnon for details.

Improving our client focus

RWAV is employing a fulltime migration agent to assist clients with the often-daunting paper work associated with moving to a foreign country.  Once a GP is recruited and placed with a practice our agent will complete and coordinate the doctor and family’s visa applications, manage the permanent residency process and all the necessary medical registration paper work.

This is one less thing the GP has to worry about and will save the practice from having to pay migration agent fees. Our migration specialist can provide helpful advice to potential candidates also.

Contact Karen Argall for more information.

Did you know that we have an orientation program for new Division workforce officers? We’ll happily host new staff members for a week in our Melbourne office.

Working alongside our recruitment and support staff will give you a greater understanding of workforce information and trends, technical knowledge and liaison and collaboration opportunities.  Our workforce orientations are tailored according to your needs.

Supporting Clinical Placements
in General Practice Education
Victorian general practices are set to experience unprecedented demand from medical students for training places over the next four years. In fact, student demand for places is expected to increase 165% by 2017!

Only one third of the general practices in Victoria offer clinical education - something needs to be done.

RWAV, in partnership with GPV, will discuss this significant issue at a conference on Friday 22 August 2008 at the Arrow on Swanston in Carlton.

This is an opportunity for industry professionals to focus on local solutions and flexible responses to the increasing clinical placement demands.

To register, contact GPV events co-ordinator Eliza Sanneman on
(03) 9341 5207 or visit www.gpv.org.au.

Locum Recruitment in New Zealand
Working together in Darwin, October 2008
Bill Newton, General Practice Victoria (GPV) Chief Executive and RWAV’s Chief Executive Claire Austin have been invited to present a paper at the Australian General Practice Network (AGPN) Forum in Darwin, October 2008.

In the last year, the two agencies have developed a strong working relationship to seek solutions to the growing workforce challenges facing Victorian general practice.

The partnership involves:
  • Collaborative research, identifying the workforce support needs and capacity of all the 29 Victorian divisions
  • Establishing service agreements with each rural Division of General Practice – creating local, pragmatic, collaborative relationships that avoid service duplication and work to each agency’s strengths
  • Providing orientation and training support to division workforce officers
  • Raising awareness and jointly advocating for general practice workforce issues at State and Commonwealth levels
  • Working on future solutions to strengthen general practice infrastructure and sustainability on a statewide basis.
Bill and Claire are excited at the opportunity to support and strengthen Victorian general practice.

For more information, contact Claire Austin at clairea@rwav.com.au.

Locum Recruitment in New Zealand
RWAV in New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand have always showed a competitive spirit, but there was none of that when RWAV recently went to Queenstown, New Zealand.

Late July some RWAV members slipped across the Tasman to attend the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners conference where we heard about the latest developments in New Zealand primary health care. We were thrilled to be there, it was a great opportunity to meet with neighbouring peers, swap intelligence and to offer Kiwi GPs a break through locum opportunities in rural Victoria.

For details regarding our campaign in Queenstown, contact Karen Argall at karena@rwav.com.au.

Service Agreements Throughout Rural Victoria
In our pursuit to improve health for all Victorian rural, regional and Aboriginal communities, RWAV is in the process of developing Service Agreements with all Victorian Divisions of General Practice.

The agreement will improve understanding between RWAV and the divisions around each organisation’s services, highlight each organisation’s duties and responsibilities, improve communications and strengthen relationships through clearly defined roles.

In doing so, we are committing to providing many services including the attraction, recruitment and retention of General Practitioners through a range of specific programs for a healthier rural Victoria.

We are proud to announce that Goulburn Valley is the first division to commit to the joint agreement.

A New Face on Indigenous Health
After many years caring for the health of indigenous communities Douglas McManus has retired from his Aboriginal Health Advisor role.  His care will centre closer to home – when he takes up a big role of looking after his grandchildren.

With extensive indigenous health experience Tina Waru, RWAV’s Manager – Indigenous & Health Policy welcomes the challenge of her new role.

One of Tina’s first priorities involves coordinating a planning session with General Practice Victoria (GPV) on indigenous developments. The three-way planning process will begin with a brainstorming forum to identify Victorian indigenous health issues on August 6.

Please refer your enquiries regarding Aboriginal Health to Tina Waru at tinaw@rwav.com.au.
