About the Area

The South Gippsland region contains some of the most diverse scenery in all of Gippsland. With the magnificent Strzelecki Ranges as the northern border, and to the south, the southern most point of Australia in the wild waters of Bass Strait, lies Wilsons Promontory National Park, renowned for its bushwalks, coastal scenery and wildlife. Tourists from around the world are drawn to the area by the fishing, bushwalking, wildlife, surfing, swimming, sailing, windsurfing and the pristine sandy beaches. Others are attracted by the wineries and the beautiful local food available at markets and the many restaurants throughout the region.

Korumburra (population 3,000), nestled in the scenic rolling green foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges in South Gippsland, was an important black coal mining centre in the late 1800s. As the industry declined, Korumburra turned to dairying as the fertile soil and reliable rainfall supported year round grazing on rich, green pastures. Burra Foods operate a large factory in Korumburra, producing a range of dairy produce. The Coal Creek Heritage Village is a popular tourist destination and a tribute to the town’s coalmining history. Nearby Loch is a small village with historic buildings, colourful cottage gardens and a delightful rural atmosphere.

There is easy access (30 minutes) to the nearest beach at Inverloch, a popular tourist resort, and just over an hour to Tidal River on the natural and beautiful Wilson's Promontory. The Latrobe Valley, with the Victorian snowfields beyond, is an hour away, so the area is literally "between the mountains and the sea".

The town has good shopping facilities, several primary and secondary schools and varied sporting amenities. It sits between Wonthaggi and Warragul, two good-sized regional centres that provide additional choices for schooling and shopping and enhanced cultural opportunities.
