The region has also experienced unprecedented growth in weekend and holiday visitors to the area, which often triples the permanent population.

Location

About the Area

San Remo is situated at the southern entrance to Western Port Bay and a bridge in the town centre provides a link from the mainland to the popular holiday destination of Phillip Island. It is a significant ocean and bay fishing port and a popular feeding spot for flocks of friendly pelicans.

San Remo was settled in 1840 when the deep water port at Griffiths Point was used to export local products such as wattlebark, farm produce and cattle. The township that grew up along the port became a popular tourist spot and in 1888 was renamed San Remo after the town on the Italian Riviera. Visitors these days can enjoy ocean fishing and boat charters that leave from the jetty. The San Remo Fisherman’s Cooperative is the leading supplier of fresh fish for the region.

The town has good pre-school and primary schooling and the regional centre of Wonthaggi, about 25 km from San Remo provides more options at primary and secondary level. Wonthaggi has a thriving commercial centre and excellent shopping.

Getting there:
San Remo is 125 km south east of Melbourne, a 90 minute drive on excellent roads. It is well serviced by coaches that also service the popular tourist destination of Phillip Island.
