Location

About the Area

Leongatha (population 6,500) is situated in the picturesque rolling hills of South Gippsland, 150 km south east of Melbourne. It is the second largest town in South Gippsland and is an important administrative and service centre for the region. It is a fertile agricultural area based on beef cattle and dairy farming and is developing an extensive agricultural base because of its ideal range of climates.

There is easy access (20 minutes) to the nearest beach at Inverloch, a popular tourist resort, and 1 hour travelling to Tidal River at the natural and beautiful Wilson's Promontory. The Latrobe Valley, with the Victorian snowfields beyond, is an hour away, so the area is literally "between the mountains and the sea".

The township is home to Murray Goulburn, producers of Devondale products. It is the largest co-operative in the country, producing milk-based products for Australian and overseas markets. The large processing plant runs 24 hour shifts and provides employment to a large number of the population. The town has excellent facilities, including several primary and secondary schools, a TAFE campus, varied sporting facilities including a first class velodrome and 2 golf courses, and quality shopping facilities, art and craft outlets, and government services.

Getting there:
