Overseas Trained Doctors
The RLRP is a program designed to assist OTDs who have permanent residency or Australian
citizenship and relevant clinical skills and experience to be able to work in rural
general practice.
Temporary Resident Doctors and New Zealand citizens/residents are not eligible
for a provider number through RLRP.
RWAV takes responsibility to oversee the placement of doctors through RLRP, to assist
them to seek an appropriate position with proper and relevant support in particular
with respect to supervision and training that might be required.

Australian Trained Doctors
Australian trained doctors are subject to the RLRP if they completed their intern
year after 1996 and have not completed a GP vocational training program or obtained
the FRACGP/FACRRM.
RWAV considers that Australian trained doctors need to have completed at least two
years post-graduate hospital work (i.e. intern year (PGY1) plus another hospital
year (PGY2) before applying for a provider number to work in rural general practice.
