Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program
The AGPT program is a world-class vocational training program for medical graduates wishing to pursue a career in general practice in Australia.
Training Overview
The program involves a three-four year full-time commitment, depending upon fellowship choices, which can be reduced with recognition of prior learning
(RPL). During training, registrars gain valuable practical experience in teaching hospitals, in rural and urban practices, in extended skills, procedural
and academic posts, and in specialised medical centers.
Training Delivery
The AGPT program is overseen and funded by General Practice Education and Training Limited (GPET), a wholly owned government company.Training is delivered through regional training providers (RTPs) across Australia. The Australian Government places a quota on the number of AGPT positions available each year, therefore entry into the program is competitive.

Pathway Options
Applicants for Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program elect to train in either the rural pathway or the general pathway.
Both rural and general pathways offer significant choice and scope in the selection of practice, hospital, and extended and advanced skills placements.
Each training provider has a network of accredited teaching practices, affiliations with regional hospitals, university schools of rural health,
and divisions of general practice. This provides registrars with extensive opportunities to obtain training and experience in all facets of
comprehensive primary medical care.
Rural Pathway
The rural pathway is designed for doctors willing to undertake the majority of their training in rural and remote areas of Australia.
Rural pathway areas are designated as Remoteness Areas (RAs) 2 to 5. Generous financial incentives are available for rural pathway registrars.
The rural pathway is offered by all four Victorian RTPs.
General Pathway
The general pathway is for doctors who wish to train in urban areas. General pathway registrars undertake
the majority of their training in metropolitan Melbourne, Geelong and Frankston and larger regional centers such
as Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton, Ballarat and Bendigo. General pathway registrars are required to undertake a minimum
of 12 months training in a rural and/or outer metropolitan location and/or an Aboriginal medical service. Incentives
are available for general pathway registrars who train in rural areas.
The general pathway is offered by all four Victorian RTPs.
