RWAV in the UK

Goulburn Valley

RWAV recently attended the British Medical Journal Career Expo in London and the Royal College of General Practitioners Annual Conference in Bournemouth to encourage UK doctors to consider Victorian rural general practice and Aboriginal health services in their career plans.

We received strong interest from many well-qualified doctors and their families. Victoria is seen as a highly desirable destination and we are confident we can convert high levels of interest into improvements in our medical workforce numbers.

______________
From the Chief Executive The Next Generation

In the last e-Blast I wrote about the significant changes occurring with the national registration framework and its impact upon the assessment and recruitment of doctors.
While the new scheme came in to force on 1 July this year much of its implementation is still a work in progress.

The details of different pathways to registration are still evolving and we are working closely with the Medical Board of Victoria and the RACGP around assessment and educational pathway requirements for general practitioners.  The implementation of this new approach is till very fluid.

I recognise that in this global climate of GP shortages, practices are using a variety of different methods to attract potential doctors, including "fee for service" private recruitment companies.

It is worth nothing that many of these companies regularly approach RWAV to seek clarification and advice on registration requirements, suggesting a growing shortfall in industry knowledge and expertise.

Unfortunately, RWAV can’t guarantee the accuracy of advice provided by others, particularly in this complex, changing environment.

While RWAV can provide expert advice, we believe we can be much more effective if we are able to work with doctors right from the beginning of the recruitment process. All our professional services are at no cost to the practice, or the doctor.

Despite current challenges, we remain committed to providing the most accurate expert advice service available. We will support the doctor from first point of contact, and continue to do so even after they are placed in a practice.

We will continue to keep you updated of developments. In the meantime, if we can provide any assistance or information, please do not hesitate to contact Tony McKinnon, Recruitment Services or 03 9349 7800.

For Health’s Sake
The Next Generation

Rural doctor shortages, ambulance mergers, policy changes and health reforms all affect us as we work to improve the health of Victorian communities.

RWAV Chief Executive Claire Austin along with a panel comprising executives and decision makers from National Health & Hospitals Reform Commission, Department of Human Services and Ambulance Victoria will tackle these issues and more at a Rural Press Club luncheon in November.

The Rural Press Club is where policy makers, community groups and organisations make major statements and introduce new ideas for rural and regional Victoria.

The forum, attended by community members and media is open to all and the health discussion will take place on Friday November 19 at Hilton on the Park.

For an opportunity to be part of the rural Victoria health system discussion, dont miss this event!

Help is at hand with Henry

Since Henry Yang, RWAV’s specialist migration agent joined us, enquiries from doctors, practices and divisions have been coming from as far as 10,000 miles away.

As part of RWAV’s unique, no cost recruitment service, we have in-house expertise to assist with complex immigration issues.

"Previously, doctors or practices would have to seek migration advice elsewhere. This is a costly service that can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $8,000", said Henry.

"Now, we do it all for them. We take care of the sponsorship, employment and visa documents with no cost to those involved".

Henry takes the hassle out of the process allowing the doctor to concentrate on the job.

If you’re a doctor, practice or division with an immigration question contact Henry at henryy@rwav.com.au or call 03 9349 7800.

Cross cultural course
Goulburn Valley
Many of us are unsure about how to address, behave or at times, be in the presence of an indigenous person.  As a doctor it can be even more difficult.

In response to these uncertainties RWAV in consultation with Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO), has developed a new Aboriginal Awareness course for health professionals.

The workshop on 29 November in Melbourne covers the history of indigenous groups, provides practical do’s and don’ts and role play activities providing practical ways in communicating effectively with Aboriginal patients.

To enrol in the new Aboriginal Awareness workshop contact Hans Spanjer.

Note: ALM Category 1 RACGP points and ACRRM PDP points pending

Knowledge is power

Recently we hosted Mallee Division staff members, Kathy Mullins and Jackie Forster for a two-day orientation program.

RWAV orientation programs are designed to give Division workforce officers and other Division employees a greater understanding of the often complex pathways and processes involved in working for the community.

Kathy and Jackie learnt valuable insights in to how and what RWAV can do to support their roles and objectives.

Having completed the workforce orientation Kathy appreciates and looks forward to a continuing working relationship with RWAV.

"An integrated approach is critical to both our organisations. Not only will this knowledge be an asset for me but so too is the relationship.

"I was impressed with RWAV’s commitment and professionalism", Kathy said.

To arrange a tailored workforce orientation program contact Cathie Irvin on 03 9349 7800.
